The cat food recall initiated by Procter & Gamble (P&G) less than a week ago has now expanded to include several Eukanuba Dog Food formulas and additional Iams Veterinary Formula cat and dog foods. P&G made the announcement on Saturday, July 30th.
The newly recalled dog food formulas include all sizes and varieties of Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure, and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin dry dog food formulas with “Best By” dates that fall in the July 1st, 2010 to December 1st, 2011 range.
Eukanuba Naturally Wild Dog Food varieties recalled include Eukanuba Naturally Wild Salmon & Rice, Turkey & Multigrain, and Venison & Potato dry dog foods, and come in 4lb, 9.5lb, 15lb, and 30lb bag sizes, as well as 7 ounce sample packs.
Eukanuba Pure dry varities in the dog food recall include Eukanuba Pure Turkey, Pure Adult Maintenance, Pure Puppy Growth, and Pure Adult Large Breed dog food, and come in 4lb, 4.5lb, 15lb, and 30lb bag sizes. The Eukanuba Dog Custom Care – Sensitive Skin dog food formula recalled is available in 5.5lb and 28lb bag sizes.
The Iams Veterinary Formula Dry Cat Food formulas recalled are the Weight Loss Restricted Calorie, Intestinal – Low Residue, Optimum Weight Control D, Renal Multi-Stage, Urinary 0 – Moderate pH/0, and Urinary S – Low pH/S cat foods.
The Iams Veterinary Formula Dry Dog Food formulas recalled are the Intestinal – Low Residue, Optimum Weight Control D, Weight Loss Restricted Calorie, Renal Early Stage, Joint, Skin and Coat Response FP, Skin & Coat Response KO, Puppy Intestinal Low Residue, and Intestinal Low Residue Breeder Bag dog foods.
All of the Iams and Eukunba pet foods involved in the recall have been pulled from shelves due to potential salmonella contamination.
Salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, and abdominal cramps, with most victims recovering within a week without treatment. Babies, elders, and those with weak immune systems are particularly vulnerable.
The recalled pet foods are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers throughout the United States and Canada. The recall doesn’t currently include Iams / Eukanuba canned pet foods, pet biscuits and treats, or pet care supplements.
P&G recommends that customers with potentially contaminated bags throw the food out immediately. Additional information and product refund inquiries should be directed to P&G’s toll free number at (877) 894-4458.
This isn’t the first pet food recall due to possible salmonella contamination. Just last month, Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food formula was recalled for the same reason.
And in 2007, a Salmonella outbreak that affected more than 70 people in 19 states was linked to contaminated dry dog food produced in a Mars Petcare pet food plant.
No other Iams formulas or other P&G pet foods are currently involved in the new recall, and none of the formulas involved in the recenty acquired Natura Pet Products, the parent company of Innova, Evo, California Natural, and Karma pet foods, have been recalled.
Still, with many Natura customers already questioning the acquisition and what it might mean for the long-term quality of the Natura products, three recalls involving P&G’s Iams and Eukanuba pet foods in two months likely won’t help ease concerns.
