With winter rolling in and the holiday season in full swing, shipping delays for Flint River Ranch pet foods may occur from time to time. Added shipping times during the holiday season are to be expected, and seasonal weather can impact shipments as well. Flooding in the Pacific Northwest earlier this month had a minor delay on some shipments to Oregon and Washington, and the recent major snow and ice storms in the Midwest and Northeast (and elsewhere across the country) impacted some shipping times to these parts of the country.

Please take the possibility of increased shipping times into account when placing your Flint River Ranch pet food orders and consider that while many shipping times will still be in the normal 2 to 4 business day range, some shipments may be closer to the upper end of the 5 to 7 day period at times.

Flint River Ranch has also initiated a recent change in shipping that will result in pet food and treat products under 20lbs in weight now being shipped only from one of the two main Flint River Ranch distribution facilities — Atlanta, Georgia, and Denver, Colorado. Multiple-item orders that contain some products under 20lbs and some 20lbs and over will be shipped via UPS from multiple distribution centers and may arrive in multiple shipments on different days as a result.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season, and we thank you again for continuing to make the health and wellness of your pets a priority!

The following is a brief recap of a recent conversation with a potential Flint River Ranch customer with their comments and our observations. It started with the individual’s statement that Flint River Ranch pet food products have not been changing its formulas to “keep up with the times.” The customer was feeding a more “modern” brand, believing that Flint River Ranch formulas were “old-fashioned” and “out-dated.”

We have always taken great personal pride in the fact that our pet food formulas are truly a selection of the very finest quality ingredients that are properly combined for superior nutrition. A 15-year history of demonstrated results of our “standard” formulas speaks for itself. Considering that our structured dog food and cat food formulas do utilize the oven-baking manufacturing process, we might appear to some as “old-fashioned.” To get a better understanding for the person’s comments, we asked for more detailed feedback and they provided the following.

The label on my dog food says “Organic” and therefore must offer better nutrition…

Does the label say 100% organic? Doubtful. “Organic” is often hyped for offering better nutritional value, but that’s not always the case. It does indicate that environmental care has been used in eliminating chemicals and pesticides — something Flint River Ranch has focused on since we started. Having said that, pet food that hasn’t been manufactured in a complete organic plant environment cannot be considered organic.

High quality ingredients have the same nutritional value when properly handled in the manufacturing process. If poorly handled, any ingredient, including organic can have limited nutritional value. We could hype Flint River Ranch formulas as they do include some organic ingredients. As our plant is not 100% organic, we prefer to refer to our ingredients as human quality. In addition to required supplier certification, we also test extensively for toxic molds, chemicals, and pesticides.

The label on my dog food says “Whole Chicken.”

Whole chicken really means whole chicken, which of course can include bones, blood, intestines, heads, feet, and in some cases feathers. Flint River Ranch uses only the meat portion of chicken — there are never any poultry by-products in our chicken meal. The hormone-free, human-grade chicken we use is of the same high quality that you feed to your family.

The label on my other dog food has “Herbs, Botanicals, and Nutraceuticals…”

Nutraceuticals include generically-engineered designer foods — genetically modified grains, dietary supplements, pharmafoods, and physiochemicals (including herbs). Herbal products in particular should be used with caution because of their potential with toxicity. Just because herbs are natural doesn’t mean they’re necessarily good – or safe – for your pet.

There are many herbs that are GRAS (generally recognized as safe), but what works for one dog may be extremely toxic to another and should not be randomly available to all types of dogs. They must be properly supervised by a trained veterinarian familiar with the guidelines and current regulations. The extremely small amount of botanicals in pet foods generally follows the old adage of “above all else, do not harm” and are generally included primarily for marketing hype, providing little if any value to the pet’s health.

A quality dog food does not need supplements unless recommended by a professional to treat or cure a specific issue. Don’t put your family pet at risk from marketing hype claims. Check with your professional veterinarian or caregiver that knows your dog or cat and do your own research. It is not the tinker-toy list of ingredients that is important — what is important is how well the nutrients are digested and utilized by the animal.

The label on my dog food has “Cellulose” needed for good fiber.

Cellulose is the main ingredient of plant tissue and fiber, including trees. It is also used in the manufacturing of explosives, paper, and textiles. Basically, Cellulose is “sawdust” used as a cheap filler in pet foods.

You are your pet’s master and not his medical doctor. It does makes sense to help prevent disease and other health challenges with proper nutrition supported by professional care. Our industry that offers many fine dog goods is the same industry that offers low-quality garbage foods as well.

While it has been known in the industry that many pet food brands are made by companies that specialize in private label products — i.e. companies that produce products for a large number of different brands. Generally, we have no problem with this if the ingredients are as represented.

The challenge became public knowledge with the recent major pet food recall. Flint River Ranch does not “farm out” any production.

All our products are made in one plant with certified USA ingredients. (Note: All ingredients used in Flint River Ranch foods are from the United States except for our certified range-fed lamb meal, which comes from New Zealand).

The cost is higher to seek out the finest ingredients, require supplier certification with our own continued in-house testing and production quality control; however, we believe our animal companions are worth it — we are sure most of our customers do as well.

Flint River Ranch behind the times? We think not. We just happen to make the very best pet food in the national market. Our only real disadvantage might be the general lack of consumer knowledge about our industry, ingredients, and what it takes to make a great pet food.

Wal-Mart has pulled two Chinese brands of dog treats from its shelves following customer reports of sickened pets. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. stopped selling Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky treats from Shanghai Bestro Trading on July 26th. The company subsequently conducted 17 sets of tests on the dog treats, with test results released today indicating the presence of trace amounts of melamine in the treats.

A statement from Wal-Mart warns customers to be especially wary of Chicken Jerky treats from Shanghai Bestro Trading with a UPC number of 0087784900006 and item number of 839751. Wal-Mart officials don’t know if the amount of melamine found in these dog treats would be enough to sicken or kill a dog that ate the suspect products, but there’s been at least one report of a customer claiming her dog died after eating some of the tainted treats.

MSNBC has more on this developing story.

Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods has recalled several of its Natural Balance Eatables dog foods due to the possible presence of botulinum toxin, which can cause botulism. The foods are produced by the Castleberry Food Company of Augusta, Georgia.

Botulism can lead to general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, and/or trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation may result from botulism as well.

The recalled dog food varieties are:

  • Natural Balance Eatables Irish Stew with Beef Dog Food – 15 Oz. can (23633-59860)
  • Natural Balance Eatables Chinese Take Out with Sauce with Vegetables and Chicken Dog Food – 15 Oz. can (23633-59861)
  • Natural Balance Eatables Southern Style Dumplings with Gravy with Chicken and Vegetables – 15 Oz. can (23633-59862)
  • Natural Balance Eatables Hobo Chili with Chicken Pasta Dog Food – 15 Oz. can (23633-59863)

The U.S. FDA has warned customers not to purchase or eat any of the canned dog food products listed above (as well as various hot dog chili sauce and canned meat products also produced by Castleberry Food Company. All “best by” and code dates for the foods are affected by the recall). Additional information is available from the Castleberry Food Company website.

Additional information is available on our Natural Balance Pet Foods Recall page.

Flint River Ranch today (June 11, 2007) initiated a new pricing structure that is effective immediately. As a distributor for Flint River Ranch we don’t have a great deal of control over the pricing that the official Flint River Ranch company sets, so it’s with regret that we announce new prices will be going into effect on our A+ FRR website starting Friday, June 15th.

A+ Flint River Ranch will continue to sell Flint River Ranch products under the existing prices until Friday.

If you’re wondering what has led to the pricing changes, here’s what the president of Flint River Ranch has to say on the current pet food market and the new FRR pricing structure:

This latest recall and the ramifications of the tainted ingredients being so widespread has instigated many changes nationally that we feel are good for our industry and necessary and important for pet owners to trust and have confidence in the pet food industry again. Thankfully, all that Jim [Flint] established as a foundation and belief for Flint River Ranch has insulated us from any of the troubles. It has also reinvigorated our customer base and brought many old customers back.

Industry Changes

The industry as a whole is now calling for more testing and certification, which will be provided at an increased cost to the consumer. As a company, Flint River Ranch has always invested in these costs, which include extensive testing and certification of pet food ingredients. However, the duplication of certification and testing efforts will come with additional costs, including [costs associated with] the pressure by regulatory agencies.

Flint River Ranch has always subscribed to purchasing ingredients from within the United States. Our quality sources are in place; however, many companies are now struggling and seeking new sources for their ingredients. There is strong bidding activity. This is putting considerable pressure on the market price, and the cost of ingredients has been pushed upward. The increased demand and use of certain grains, like corn for alternate energy sources, also puts pressure on the cost of all other grains.

The increased energy and fuel costs not only affect manufacturing and production overhead, but also have significant impact on transportation and distribution. These costs are increased when you consider the movement of freight is compounded as one cost builds on another. Flint River Ranch worked to structure national distribution centers to reduce shipping costs and improve delivery time. While this has been effective and benefits our customers, our shipping costs are more than double what they were a few years ago. These costs have been included in our product pricing to avoid additional shipping costs.

Many competitors add $5 to $7.50 for shipping plus the price of the product. Making a special trip to purchase pet food can cost you $2 to $3 in gas alone, besides valuable time. Home delivery is a most effective way to make sure your pet’s food is on hand.

Customers and those Distributors who have been with Flint River Ranch for a while, realize that we are a conservative company and have always put forth effort to keep our costs as low as possible. We have often been criticized for our conservative approach, but we always strive to benefit our customers. Those that study the market price of various quality pet food products have seen price increases over the last few months, with more increases pending before mid-summer.

FRR Price Changes

Flint River Ranch is announcing a price adjustment that will be taking force on Monday, June 11th. We are strongly negotiating with suppliers for long-term contracts for favorable pricing. We could lower our costs with cheaper ingredients, but we have pledged to keep our formulas standard and to maintain high quality without changes. Price increases will be structured only to cover our increased costs.

Flint River Ranch is also phasing out the 6 lb. bag of the Flint River Ranch Adult & Puppy Dog Food. All other sizes (10lb, 20lb, 40lb, 200lb, and 520lb) will still be available.

Expertox, a lab in Deer Park, Texas, today reported that it has found toxic levels of acetaminophen and/or cyanuric acid poisons in dozens of pet food samples. The contaminants could be lethal for pets, and the FDA has already launched an investigation, but the lab cannot legally reveal which pet food brands tested positive for the drugs. Acetaminophen, a pain relief medication, can be toxic and potentially lethal to pets, especially cats.

According to the lab, The contaminants were found in foods that are not among the more than 150 brands recalled since March 16. We’ll have more information as it becomes available, but the Pittsburgh Tribune-review has a news story about the lab results that’s definitely worth checking out.

“We were looking for cyanuric acid and melamine, and the acetaminophen just popped up,” Donna Coneley, lab operations manager for ExperTox Inc. in Deer Park, Texas, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review yesterday. “It definitely was a surprise to find that in several samples.”
