Simmons Pet Food has issued a recall for fifteen varieties of its canned dog food product line due to the linings separating from the inside of the cans. The Arkansas-based company initiated a voluntary withdrawal from distribution this past Monday (June 12th) after finding random flaking of the inside coating of the cans, with all affected products required to be removed from retail store shelves.

The products affected by the Simmons pet food recall include all 22-ounce canned pet food with “use by” dates between March 16, 2008, and June 6, 2008. The dog foods are distributed through major retail store chains, including Wal-Mart (Ol Roy), Kmart, and Allied Foods. We now have a full FAQ available on the Simmons dog food recall with additional information on the news.

Flint River Ranch has made the decision to discontinue several products in its pet treats line of products. On the way out are two flavors of the dog wafer treats as well as the cat treats. The company has already run out of its Flint River Ranch Cat Treats and the Herbal Wafer treats for dogs, with the Chicken & Rice flavor of the dog wafers not far behind — Flint River Ranch expects to have enough supply to support this flavor for another six weeks (through May 15, 2006).

We’ve removed all three products from the A+ Flint River Ranch website, although we’ll still be accepting phone and fax orders (toll free 877.919.5356) for the Chicken and Rice Dog Wafers until they’re all gone. We especially hate to see the Herbal Wafers go, as they were one of our bestsellers and also one of our dogs’ personal favorites.

It’s not all sad news on the product front, though, as we’re excited to report the newest product in the Flint River Ranch family, called Sun-dried Bonita Fish Flakes. These healthy, all natural treats have already proven to be a big hit with both cats and dogs, and we’re looking forward to offering them through A Plus FRR. Additional information and product pictures for the Bonita Flake treats are now available on the new Bonito Fish Flakes page.

An outbreak of the dog flu has been reported in Colorado and is expected to continue spreading throughout the state and possibly beyond. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Association has issued a warning to veterinarians that at least 16 dog flu cases have been confirmed in the state. At least 53 blood samples from Colorado dogs have been tested by Cornell University in New York, with a third of them having tested positive.

March 24, 2006 Update: Reports of canine influenza spreading west continue to appear, with one confirmed dog flu case in the San Franciso, California, area as well as a reported outbreak in North Texas.

We have a Dog Flu Virus FAQ with additional information on canine influenza.

ROYAL CANIN has recalled three of its Veterinary Diet Canine canned dog foods in the wake of 24 reported cases of hypercalcemia in Canada and eight cases in the United States from November 2005 through February 2006. Left untreated, hypercalcemia (excessive amounts of calcium levels in the blood) can lead to bone defects, cardiac changes (including abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia), kidney hypertension and possible renal failure, and, at especially high levels, death.

The three Waltham Royal Canin Veterinary Diet formulas are: Canine Urinary SO, Canine Calorie Control, and Canine Low Fat. We now have a full FAQ available on the Royal Canin Recall with additional information on the news.

As you can probably tell by our company logo, we’re big fans of the Dalmatian breed. Dalmatians are great dogs and make wonderful pets, and movies like 101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians, etc. have helped make Dals a popular choice when choosing a dog. The movies paint a picture of how charming and amazing Dalmatians can be, but what they fail to mention are the characteristics unique to the Dalmatian breed that can unfortunately lead to critical health concerns if not understood and monitored.

The good news is that issues common to Dalmatians like deafness, urinary stones, skin allergies, and an amazing propensity for exercise require little in the way of special care. In fact, as long as you follow three important rules of Dalmatian Dog Care, your dog’s chances of living a long, healthy, life free of pain and disease are extremely high.

If you currently own a Dalmatian or are considering the breed, we urge you to read our new Healthy Dalmatian Diet pet health article. If you have any questions about the breed or about Dal care, we’re only an e-mail away.

Diamond pet foods has issued a recall for contaminated foods for dogs and cats. Over 100 canine deaths and at least one feline fatality during December 2005 have been linked to Diamond pet foods contaminated by the potentially deadly toxin Aflatoxin, according to Cornell University veterinarians. Aflatoxin is similar to another toxic byproduct, Vomitoxin, that was found in Nature’s Recipe brand dog food in 1995.

Our Diamond Dog Food Recall FAQ has additional information on the recall, symptoms to watch for, and how to tell if your food may be contaminated.

December 30 Update: Tests by North Carolina officials have resulted in an expansion of the Diamond Pet Food recall after revealing high levels of a toxic substance in a batch of Diamond brand dog food that was NOT included in the previous recall. In addition to the products listed below, the recall now also covers 40 pound bags of Diamond Pet Foods Professional for Adult Dogs with the best by code of 29-Jan-07.

January 11 Update: Diamond reported on Wednesday, Jan. 11th, that it has narrowed the number of contaminated pet food products. Testing of more than 2,700 finished product samples conducted by independent laboratories has found that only Diamond Maintenance Dog and Diamond Premium Adult Dog formulas with “Best By” dates of April 3, April 4, April 5, and April 11, 2007, are potentially toxic. These products also will have a capital “G” (in reference to the company’s Gaston, S.C., facility) in the 11th or 12th position of the date code (18 lb. to 55 lb. bags). The capital “G” will be in the 9th position on smaller 4 lb. to 8 lb. bags.

Diamond also announced on Jan 11 that 76 dogs have been confirmed dead from aflatoxin after eating the company’s pet food.
