Doane Pet Care Co. has issued a recall for its Ol’ Roy Complete Nutrition dog food due to concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The food is only sold through Wal-Mart stores, and only a single batch of 55lb bags of the formula is being recalled. The batch was produced at a Manassas, Virginia plant and was distributed to Wal-Mart stores in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio.

Doane reports that people handling the food could potentially be exposed to the bacteria, as well as pets that eat the food; the company however says no illnesses have been reported to day.

This recall does not have any relation to the melamine-tainted pet food recall. Additional information can be found on the Doane web site.

The national pet food recall has expanded once again, this time due to melamine toxin in a rice protein concentrate ingredient that has been imported by Wilbur-Ellis Co. of San Francisco, California, from Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. Ltd. in China (a separate Chinese company from the one that shipped the tainted wheat gluten ingredient).

In addition to the previously reported Natural Balance Pet Foods recall for its Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food formulas manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, Royal Canin has now recalled seven canine dry dog foods and one dry cat food formula, and Blue Buffalo has recalled one production run of its Spa Select Kitten dry cat food formula.

The recalled Royal Canin foods are:

  • Royal Canin Chicken & Rice Formula Senior Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Lamb & Rice Formula Puppy Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Lamb & Rice Formula Adult Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Lamb & Rice Formula Senior Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Rice & Catfish Formula Adult Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Canine Early Cardiac EC 22 Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Canine Canine Skin Support SS21 Dog Food
  • Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Hypoallergenic HP23 Cat Food

Wilbur-Ellis announced that it had shipped its contaminated rice protein concentrate to five different pet food manufacturers, but it didn’t identify the companies by name. So far three have been identified (Natural Balance via Diamond Pet Foods, Royal Canin, and Blue Buffalo). The contaminated rice protein concentrate has also made its way into hog feed, according to Wilbur-Ellis.

Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods has recalled its Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food formulas after receiving reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. It’s not known at this time whether this recall is related to the melamine problem.

The recall includes all date codes of Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company does not know the cause of the problem but reports that it is focused on one particular lot.

Additional information is available on our Natural Balance pet food recall page.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) has approved the country’s first drug developed specifically to address the issue of canine obesity. Pfizer Animal Health’s Slentrol prescription medication reduces both appetite and fat absorption in overweight dogs to help them lose weight.

Also known as dirlotapide, Slentrol will help owners of the roughly 5 percent of obese dogs and the 20 percent to 30 percent of dogs that are overweight in the U.S. It comes at a time when many dogs are being exercised less frequently and fed more food and treats than they need. Slentrol will be available nationwide this spring, with a daily dose expected to cost between $1 and $2.

We have a Pet Obesity FAQ with additional information on canine obesity and the new Slentrol pet weight loss drug.

The Flint River Ranch company has decided to focus production and shipping efforts solely on what it has developed over the years – high quality, all natural, oven baked pet food formulas, biscuits, and treats. As part of this decision, Flint River Ranch will unfortunately be discontinuing a number of pet products as 2006 comes to a close.

As of January 30th, 2007, the following items will no longer be available from Flint River Ranch: All Nylabones (all flavors and all sizes), Pet Force Pet Stain Cleaner, and all Hickory-Smoked Dog Chew Bones. This is not a decision we at A+ Flint River Ranch are happy to report, but it does mean that we will be unable to offer these items unless and until we find another supplier.

The good news is that Flint River Ranch expects this change to free up capital towards improving on and adding to its line of all natural, super premium dog foods and cat foods. No new products have been announced at this time, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Note: Supplies of the above items that will be discontinued in early 2007 are extremely limited, so we recommend purchasing these items soon while they still remain in stock.

Inflation’s been creeping along recently, with the surge in gas prices (nearly 35%) only the most noticeable and severe of many price increases over the last year. In fact, the U.S. Labor Department recently reported that consumer prices rose at a rate of 4.3 percent from June 2005 to June 2006.

Pet owners are feeling the crunch as well, with the cost of pet food having gone up, on average, 5.2 percent in the past year. The good news is that despite the gas and pet food cost increases, our prices at Flint River Ranch have held steady over the last several years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. And with free shipping on every order above $8, customers save even more by not having to waste gas driving to the local feed or pet store.
