The United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) has issued a warning letter to the Iams Company regarding several of its Eukanuba Veterinary Diets canned and dry dog food formulas. Four of the Eukanuba Vet Diets cat and dog foods for weight management contain a substance, chromium tripicolinate, that is not an approved food supplement.
The U.S. FDA considers chromium tripicolinate to be genotoxic, which means it can potentially damage DNA and cause mutations and tumors. These foods are not under recall, but a warning has been issued to the Iams Company and Eukanuba by the FDA
Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control/Canine Dry, Optimum Weight Control/Feline Dry, Restricted-Calorie/Canine dry and canned, and Restricted-Calorie/Feline dry and canned all contain the chromium tripicolinate substance.
This is only a warning and request to remove the substance in these foods, as opposed to a full recall of the cat foods and dog foods. It is also a pre-existing issue separate from the Iams and Eukanuba wet cat and dog foods included in the recent Menu Pet Foods pet food recall.
While Iams has contested the warning with data demonstrating that chromium tripicolinate is non-genotoxic, the FDA, through the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), has deemed the data inconclusive and not sufficient to address animal safety concerns.
In addition to the CVM's request regarding removal of the substance, the warning states it is "The Iams Company's responsibility to ensure that its overall operation and the products it manufactures and markets are in compliance with the [Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic] Act."
A+ FRR Note: Flint River Ranch has no involvement with Iams or Eukanuba, and none of Flint River Ranch's all natural, healthy dog food formulas or cat food formulas are involved in this pet food warning or any other pet food recall.
